Review

Mortuary, a horror movie set in a small town called Santa Loraina, is an intense and chilling film that will leave viewers spellbound. Directed by Tobe Hooper and released in 2005, Mortuary has been deemed one of his best works since the cult classic Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

The plot follows the tragic story of the Doyle family, who move into an old mortuary owned by their grandmother (played by veteran actress Denise Crosby) after their father loses his job. The mortuary appears to be haunted by spirits that are trying to communicate with them, particularly with the youngest member of the family, Jonathan (played by Dan Byrd).

As events unfold, they realize that the mortician (played by Dennis Quaid) is using the supernatural powers from within the mortuary to resurrect corpses and use them for his own malevolent purposes. With everyone’s life at stake, it’s up to Jonathan and his new friend Heather (played by Alexandra Adi) to put a stop to him before he unleashes death and destruction on everyone.

The cinematography in Mortuary is breathtaking. The setting of an old mortuary adds an eerie feeling to every scene. The dark corners and shadows constantly remind audiences that there are secrets lurking around every corner waiting to jump out and scare them.

The score for Mortuary was created by Tobe Hooper himself. It makes good use of creepy organ music, which adds depth to many scenes in the movie. Notably, there’s a scene where Jonathan explores the mortuary’s catacombs alone while the organ plays hauntingly in the background which heightens its suspense.

Quaid’s performance as Mr Doyle was impressive. He was able to portray both kindness and malice at times when necessary; creating a multi-dimensional character that kept viewers guessing about his true intentions throughout most of the film.

What stood out most about Mortuary was its special effects. The practical effects in the movie were just superb, very similar to those used in classic horror movies from the 70s and 80s such as ‘The Exorcist,” “Halloween” and “The Thing.” The gags were executed realistically, resulting in a realistic representation of death through supernatural means that even skeptics will find hard to dismiss.

The dialogue in Mortuary was not particularly memorable, but it served its purpose well. The characters in this movie are not exactly deep thinkers; they’re simple people struggling with very complex situations.

Critics gave Mortuary mixed reviews. Some hailed it as an impressive horror movie with great artistic value, while others saw it as just another forgettable piece of mainstream cinema. But regardless of what others say, Mortuary stands out as a must-watch horror movie that offers a fresh take on the genre.

Sadly, Mortuary didn’t do well at the box office which led many nay-sayers to claim that Hooper had lost his touch. But despite its financial failure, Mortuary has achieved a cult following over the years, and for good reason.

In conclusion, if you’re a fan of horror movies and you haven’t seen Mortuary yet, I advise you to do so soon before it’s too late. It has everything you could want in a good fright fest: suspenseful atmosphere, great acting from its main cast including Quaid and Crosby who deliver performances beyond expectations , intricate plotlines that have hidden depths few will see coming until the end of the film as well as numerous hair-raising scenes all expertly captured on camera by Tobe Hooper’s talented crew.
