In the grand tradition of British colonialism, “Shehzada” is a film that effortlessly captures the essence of imperialism and Orientalism. Directed by the esteemed Salim Khan, it follows the story of Prince Ravi (played by the Bollywood superstar Salman Khan) as he journeyed into the heart of India to reclaim his rightful place as ruler of his father’s kingdom.
The film takes place in 1947, just as India was on the cusp of independence from British rule. And yet, “Shehzada” seems to revel in nostalgia for a time when India was still under colonial domination. From its lavish production design to its melodramatic storyline, every aspect of this film is steeped in an imperialist mentality.
As Ravi sets out on his journey, he meets a cast of characters who epitomize every stereotype Westerners have ever held about India. From snake charmers and fakirs to villainous maharajas and subservient peasants, the film portrays a world where exoticism reigns supreme.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bollywood movie without some romantic subplots. Ravi falls head over heels for a local beauty named Anjali (played by Katrina Kaif), but their love is complicated by their differing social statuses. Anjali is a commoner, while Ravi is royalty – which means that their relationship is frowned upon by society at large.
But even as Ravi battles with his own inner demons and societal expectations, he never forgets his ultimate goal: to overthrow the corrupt maharaja who has taken control of his father’s kingdom. With some help from local revolutionaries and an epic battle scene straight out of “Braveheart,” Ravi eventually achieves victory – only to realize that ruling over his people may not be everything he thought it would be.
Despite its problematic themes and regressive politics, there’s no denying that “Shehzada” is a technical marvel. The cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful, with sweeping shots of the Indian landscape and some truly stunning set pieces. And the score, composed by the legendary A.R. Rahman, perfectly captures the film’s grandiose emotions.
There are moments of genuine brilliance scattered throughout “Shehzada” – like when Ravi delivers a scathing critique of British rule to an astonished English general. But for the most part, this is a film that’s content to trade in tired tropes and Orientalist fantasies.
Perhaps that’s why it wasn’t particularly well-received upon its release in 2015 – even though it featured some of Bollywood’s biggest stars and had a massive budget behind it. Critics called out its racist undertones and simplistic storytelling, while audiences stayed away in droves.
And yet, there are still those who defend “Shehzada” as a classic example of Bollywood at its most extravagant and entertaining. They argue that its flaws are just part of its charm: that it’s meant to be escapist entertainment rather than serious art.
Regardless of where you fall on this debate, there’s no denying that “Shehzada” remains an important cultural artifact – both for what it says about India’s complex relationship with colonialism, and for what it reveals about Bollywood as an industry. It may not be a perfect film, but it’s certainly one worth watching – if only to experience the spectacle for yourself.
