Review

As I sat down to watch Ronia, The Robber’s Daughter, I had no idea what to expect. I knew it was based on a book by Astrid Lindgren, the beloved author of Pippi Longstocking, but beyond that, I was going in blind. What followed was a magical and thrilling adventure that captured my heart from the very first scene.

The movie follows Ronia (played by Hanna Zetterberg), the young daughter of Mattis (Börje Ahlstedt), the leader of a band of robbers who live deep in the forest. Ronia is a fierce and independent spirit who longs to explore the world beyond her family’s stronghold. When she meets Birk (Dan Håfström), the son of a rival robber gang, they quickly become friends despite their fathers’ feuding.

The plot is simple but engrossing, with plenty of action and adventure to keep you on the edge of your seat. But what really sets this movie apart is its stunning cinematography and score. The forest setting is lush and vibrant, with every shot feeling like a work of art. And the hauntingly beautiful music by Björn Isfält perfectly captures the mood of each scene.

But what truly makes Ronia, The Robber’s Daughter so special are its characters. Ronia is a remarkable protagonist – brave, curious, and full of life. Her friendship with Birk is heartwarming and genuine, despite their families’ animosity. And her relationship with her father is complex – she loves him deeply but struggles to reconcile his violent lifestyle with her own ideals.

The supporting cast is just as strong – from Lovis (Lena Nyman), Ronia’s kind-hearted mother who longs for peace between the robber bands, to Skalle-Per (Per Oscarsson), an eccentric member of Mattis’ gang who offers comic relief throughout the movie.

Despite being released in 1984, Ronia, The Robber’s Daughter holds up remarkably well. Its themes of friendship, family, and the struggle to find one’s place in the world are timeless. And its message of peace and understanding over violence and hatred reverberates just as strongly today as it did nearly four decades ago.

It’s a shame that Ronia, The Robber’s Daughter isn’t more widely known outside of its native Sweden. But for those who have had the pleasure of watching it, it’s a treasure that will stay with you long after the credits roll. As Ronia herself says: “I don’t think anyone can ever forget what they’ve loved as a child.”
