Review

It was an afternoon just like any other when I stumbled upon the delightful movie, “Must Love Dogs.” It was a drizzly day, with the kind of rain that makes one want to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book. But instead, I found myself drawn into the world of this film, captivated by its wit and charm.

The story revolves around Sarah Nolan (Diane Lane), a middle-aged woman who is trying to navigate the tricky waters of dating after her divorce. Her well-meaning family sets her up with countless guys, but she can’t seem to find anyone who really clicks with her. That is until she meets Jake Anderson (John Cusack), a charming and laid-back boat builder who loves dogs just as much as she does.

As their relationship develops, Sarah and Jake must navigate the ups and downs of modern dating. From awkward first dates to meddling exes, they face all kinds of obstacles along the way. But through it all, they have their beloved furry companions by their side.

One thing that really stands out about “Must Love Dogs” is its stellar cast. Diane Lane shines in the lead role, bringing both vulnerability and humor to her portrayal of Sarah. And John Cusack is absolutely magnetic as Jake – he’s got that classic leading man charisma that makes you root for him from the very beginning.

But it’s not just the two leads who steal the show – there are also some fantastic supporting performances from actors like Elizabeth Perkins (who plays Sarah’s sister) and Dermot Mulroney (who plays one of Sarah’s many suitors). Everyone involved in this film seems to be having a blast, which makes it that much more enjoyable to watch.

Of course, no discussion of “Must Love Dogs” would be complete without mentioning its source material – a novel by Claire Cook. The book was a bestseller when it was released in 2002, and the film adaptation captures much of its warmth and humor.

Director Gary David Goldberg brings a light touch to the material, making it feel like a breezy romantic comedy without ever losing sight of the emotional stakes at play. He also makes great use of the film’s Boston setting, giving viewers a sense of place that adds depth to the story.

One thing that really surprised me about “Must Love Dogs” was how well it holds up today. Despite being over 15 years old at this point, it still feels fresh and relevant. The issues that Sarah and Jake face – like online dating and meddling relatives – are ones that many people can relate to even now.

And while the film certainly has its share of cheesy moments (like a scene where Sarah and Jake dance on a boat while fireworks explode overhead), it always manages to stay charming rather than cloying. This is thanks in large part to the chemistry between Lane and Cusack – they’re just so darn likable together.

But perhaps my favorite thing about “Must Love Dogs” is its celebration of canine companionship. As someone who adores dogs myself, I found myself nodding along with every reference to wagging tails and slobbery kisses. The movie reminds us that our furry friends can be sources of joy and comfort even in our darkest moments.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a feel-good romantic comedy with plenty of heart, look no further than “Must Love Dogs.” With its sharp writing, fantastic cast, and adorable canines, it’s sure to bring a smile to your face – rain or shine.
