The Power of Vulnerability in Karungaapiyam

Have you ever watched a movie that made you feel vulnerable? A movie that touched your heart, challenged your beliefs, and inspired you to reflect on your own struggles and strengths? If not, I highly recommend Karungaapiyam, a Tamil film directed by debutant Selvendran Vaithy. This movie explores themes of discrimination, social justice, mental health, family relationships, and spiritual healing through the eyes of three main characters: Jagan (played by Vasanth Ravi), a young man from a Dalit community who faces caste-based violence and oppression; Raji (played by Parvathy Nair), a journalist who investigates the injustice faced by Jagan and his people; and Mari (played by Rohini), a retired teacher who mentors Jagan and helps him confront his past traumas.

Karungaapiyam is not an easy movie to watch. It confronts us with the harsh reality of how casteism operates in our society and how it affects the lives of millions of people who are born into lower castes. From the opening scene where we see Jagan being beaten up by upper-caste men for daring to enter their temple to the closing scene where he finds solace in an abandoned church, the movie shows us how religion can either unite or divide people based on their social status. The title itself means “the book of black magic” in Tamil, hinting at the subversive nature of knowledge that challenges the dominant norms of society.

However, Karungaapiyam is also a hopeful movie. It shows us that even in the darkest moments of our lives, we can find allies who believe in our dignity and worth. Jagan’s encounter with Mari leads him to confront his own internalized shame and anger towards his abusive father (played by Gnanasambandam) and discover his own creative talents as a writer and poet. Raji’s pursuit of justice for Jagan’s case leads her to question her own privileged position as an upper-caste woman and empathize with the struggles of others who face discrimination. The movie also features some beautiful songs (composed by K), which enhance the mood and meaning of each scene, particularly the haunting “Kannil Mazhai” sung by Sid Sriram.

One of the most impressive aspects of Karungaapiyam is the acting performances of its main cast. Vasanth Ravi, who previously starred in Taramani, portrays Jagan with a raw intensity and vulnerability that makes us root for him despite his flaws and mistakes. Parvathy Nair, who has acted in Malayalam, Kannada, and Tamil movies, gives a nuanced portrayal of Raji as a determined yet conflicted journalist who struggles to balance her career aspirations with her personal values. Rohini, an experienced actor who has played memorable roles in many Tamil films such as Mouna Ragam and Anjali, shines in her role as Mari, a wise and kind mentor who listens to Jagan’s pain without judging him.

The technical aspects of Karungaapiyam are also noteworthy. The cinematography by Vijay Armstrong captures the beauty and ugliness of rural Tamil Nadu with equal skill, using long takes and close-ups to immerse us in the characters’ emotions and environments. The editing by San Lokesh enhances the pace and impact of each scene while maintaining coherence in the nonlinear narrative structure. The sound design by Sree Sankar creates a rich soundscape that blends naturalistic sounds with symbolic motifs such as bells ringing or dogs barking.

Karungaapiyam has received critical acclaim from several film festivals and reviewers for its bold storytelling style, sensitive treatment of sensitive issues, and empathetic characterization. However, it has also faced some controversy from conservative groups who accused it of promoting inter-caste marriage and insulting Hindu sentiment. The director and the cast have defended their artistic freedom and their intention to spark a dialogue about social justice and equality, while acknowledging the importance of respecting different perspectives and cultural values.

As Brené Brown, a renowned researcher on vulnerability and shame, would say, Karungaapiyam invites us to embrace our vulnerability as a source of strength and growth. It challenges us to confront our own biases, fears, and preconceptions about casteism, gender roles, mental health stigma, and other forms of social injustice that affect us all. It inspires us to seek connection with others who share our values and dreams for a better world. And it reminds us that healing is not only an individual journey but also a collective responsibility. As Jagan writes in his poem “Karungaapiyam,” “I release my pain into the wind/And wait for it to return as hope.”
